Switching Off Language Detection in JAWS

The JAWS synthesizer is able to automatically switch to the appropriate language when the language of the text is correctly marked up. This can sometimes cause problems when reading especially if you do not require the use of another language and in some cases as you are reading through English written text, the synthesizer language automatically changes . Herewith the steps to disable this feature.

If you are using JAWS 12 or Later

  1. Press INSERT+F2 to bring up a list of JAWS Managers.
  2. Press the letter S till you reach Settings Center and then press enter. When Settings Center opens, press CTRL+SHIFT+D to open the Default Configuration file.
  3. In the Search Box edit field, type, Language
  4. Tab once and your focus lands on the option, Detect Languages, press the spacebar to uncheck this option
  5. Tab to the Ok button and press the spacebar to save changes and close the dialog box

If you are using JAWS 11 or earlier

  1. Press INSERT+F2 to bring up a list of JAWS Managers.
  2. Press the letter C till you reach Configuration Manager and then press enter. When the JAWS Configuration Manager opens, press CTRL+SHIFT+D to open the Default Configuration file.
  3. Press Alt+S and then the letter T to bring up the Text Processing Dialog
  4. Press the Tab key about 9 times till you reach the option, Detect Languages, press the spacebar to uncheck this option and then press enter to close the dialog
  5. Press Alt+F4 to close the Configuration Manager and then press enter when prompted to Save Changes
