Orbit Reader 20 Plus Firmware Update

Orbit Research has released a firmware update for the Orbit Reader 20 Plus.

The new version, A1.xx.00.09r49, has the following new features and improvements:

  1. A new menu item, “UTF8”, has been added to support reading files encoded in UTF-8 format without a BOM.  It is sometimes difficult for computing systems to guess the format of a file if it does not have a BOM.  This new feature allows users to specifically choose this file type in cases where the system can’t guess the type correctly.
  2. A hotkey command [Space + Dot 1 3 6] has been introduced to toggle the “UTF8” option
  3. Searching in a BRF file now works faster and for large files also. It previously used to fail if the file size exceeded 30 MB.

Notes:

  1. The localization files have been changed to accommodate the new menu item.  New localization files must be downloaded and installed on the device, otherwise the new release will not work.
  2. Please note that the device settings will be reset to their defaults after the upgrade if the device’s current firmware version is A1.xx.00.09r47 or an earlier version.

The firmware package can be downloaded from the Orbit Research website.

To identify the proper firmware package for your unit, you will need to check the version number of the firmware currently loaded on your unit. If your unit does not turn on or if you are not able to read the version number from your device, you can contact our support team at support@sensorysolutions.co.za.

To check the version number of your current firmware package please follow the following steps:

  1. Power ON your unit.
  2. Press the Select + Up key to open the menu.
  3. Scroll down to the item “Ver.” by pressing down the arrow key.
  4. It should display the firmware version number on your Braille display.

Check the first four digits of the version number and click on the respective link in the table on the Orbit Research website to download the appropriate firmware package. Once downloaded, you can install it using the SD card method or using the Windows utility program.
