< All Topics Main FAQ Changing the Speech Rate in JAWS Print Changing the Speech Rate in JAWS Posted6th August 2016 Updated23rd November 2022 ByTech Support Learn how to permanently Set the JAWS Speech Rate temporarily Adjust the Speech Rate of JAWS How to Permanently Set the JAWS Speech Rate In JAWS 14 or later: Press Ctrl+Alt+Windows+PageUp to increase the speech rate Press Ctrl+Alt+Windows+PageDown to decrease the speech rate In earlier Versions of JAWS: Press INSERT+J and then do one of the following to open the StartUp Wizard dialog box, If the JAWS application window appears, press Alt+H, followed by the letter Z or select the Help menu and select StartUp Wizard in this menu If the JAWS context menu appears, press the letter H and then the letter Z or click Help and then click StartUp Wizard The Speech Settings window appears and your focus is placed on the Speech Rate scroll bar. Press LEFT ARROW, DOWN ARROW, or PAGE DOWN to decrease the speech rate. Press RIGHT ARROW, UP ARROW, or PAGE UP to increase the speech rate. The default rate is 57. Press the Enter key 5 times to save your changes and close the StartUp Wizard dialog box To Temporarily Adjust the Speech Rate of JAWS: Press Ctrl+Alt+PageUp to increase the speech rate Press Ctrl+Alt+PageDown to decrease the speech rate Note: The temporary changes will revert to the default once focus is moved away from the current window.
